As you set out on this next phase of your life, there are a few things that I would like to share with you...
I am so proud of you, and the courage it takes to get up and move away from what is so familiar. As I mentioned to you earlier, you are the first person in our family (for a few generations) to leave California for more than a vacation!!
You have made graduate school a huge priority in your life, and it has already opened doors for you. Your dedication to your education, not knowing exactly where it will take you is inspiring to me, and makes me want to be better and do better for myself.
Your presence in our lives (mine, Justin's and Brennan's), and especially your physical presence these last few months has deepened my wanting and knowing of family. Both the family I know and the family I am creating.
You are an inspiration to me, and I love you and miss you already!!
This blog is a gift to you from all of us. We will share with you over the next days, weeks, months our thoughts, pictures, easy recipes, favorite wines, new shoes, first words...
Much love,
K

Jacob,
It has been my great pleasure to have known you all of your life and to have
seen you grow up and mature over the years. (When did you start drinking
scotch?! Yikes!) You are a very bright, intelligent, witty young man who
will no doubt, not just succeed, but excel in your graduate school endeavor.
I am impressed with your sense of adventure to move to the bitterly cold and
windy Midwest -- a place so unlike where you come from. Chicago is a great
city. I can't wait to hear about all your experiences there. And I'm sure
Chicago won't be the same after having experienced you!
Best of luck to you at grad school, Jacob. I am very proud of you!

Jake the Snake...
It was great seeing you at Adam's wedding and I'm looking forward to a little Basil Hayden when we get to Chicago in a few weeks.
Just remember that grad school is an extension of the previous four year vacation that people call a bachelor's degree. Enjoy it while you can... as this 10 hours/day working at a desk to earn a living gets old and then YOU have to pay for your vacations! Learn much, live life, listen well and don't forget to always leave home with clean under garments!
Good luck, Jacob! I know you are smart and adventurous enough to conquer all quests!

ps... I hope you own a parka!
Hiya son,
You are ensconced in Chicago now. I am still envious of the journey you are beginning. All of the new things you will learn and do. A chance to roam around a cool city. Yeah, it is a lot of work but you have proved yourself up to that over and over. I send you sincere affection and a wish of good luck.
I love you son .

SNAKE!
Still seems like yesterday when we took you to see the movie that still endures as the true formative experience of your lifetime ... Howard Stern's "Private Parts." That was clearly the time in your life when you needed the perspective, wisdom and life lessons offered up by such an enduring cultural icon. Plus .. Katherine being forced to explain the "speaker scene" was fun :)
Jeanette and I are thrilled to hear about the next stop in your journey (not to mention rather OLD...doesn't seem too long ago that you were at our wedding) We wish you the best, and are counting on you to educate our children some day (just don't grade 'em too tough...)
All the best...

Hi Jacob, We hope you enjoy the beginning of school. As you settle in, let us know how you like this chapter. We'll be thinking of you

hey Jacob,
Been thinking about you, a week now at your new school (not yet i think), in a new city, with a new apartment plus new roomie, and everything a new sight...yep, a NEW LIFE. I sure liked the lttle bit i was able to hang out with you the past few months. Made me aware of what a neat family we're growing to be. Being a new mom is a pretty intense overwhelming thing, and i thank you for being so 'there' for katherine. You're a cool guy and almost as cute as baby-baby!
My friend Gail who's from Chicago says, when you have a morning or an afternoon, take the Architectural River Trip! (i think she said sponsored by the Archit. Museum) And soon i'll send along the chocolate pudding recipe- dead easy. I'd love to hear your first impressions if/when you have time...buona fortuna, caro!
love, mikie
